Nail Injury Bleeding Under Fingernail Or Toenail

Nail Injury: Bleeding Under Fingernail or Toenail

What is a Subungual Hematoma?

A subungual hematoma is a collection of blood that accumulates beneath the nail, causing it to appear dark or discolored. This condition occurs when blood vessels under the nail break open due to injury. The injury can be caused by a variety of factors, such as stubbing your toe or finger, or having something heavy fall on your nail.

Symptoms of a Subungual Hematoma

The most common symptom of a subungual hematoma is a dark or discolored nail. The nail may also be painful, tender, or swollen. In some cases, the nail may even detach from the nail bed.

Treatment for a Subungual Hematoma

There is no specific treatment for a subungual hematoma. The blood will eventually be reabsorbed by the body and the nail will grow out normally. However, there are some things you can do to help relieve the pain and discomfort associated with this condition. These include:

  • Applying ice to the affected area
  • Taking over-the-counter pain medication
  • Elevating the affected limb
  • Keeping the nail clean and dry
